Clive Thompson is to be congratulated for the hard and tedious work that he put into recording the story of his family. To bring history to life, more families should be encouraged to do the same.

Going as far back as the 1600s requires patience and determination to follow the thread both back and forth to fill in the blanks.

I enjoyed reading this family tale. I would hope that the hundreds related in some way to these four families will carefully read this book and add their bits of knowledge to it.

A small sample - part  of Chapter two.

Chapter Two - Clark.

Gosport, Lymington, both in Hampshire, to Salcombe in Devon, to Somerset, to Scotland, back to Somerset with a hint of Bristol thrown in, before all merge on Cardiff.

This part of the story begins in Hampshire, based around the towns and villages of Gosport, Brockenhurst, Boldre and Lymington. It mainly centres around the Clark family (mostly spelt Clark but sometimes Clarke) and their travels that ended with them being in Cardiff. Clark is a name we will follow from before 1696 to 1909, so followed over 213 years.

It starts in the reign of King Charles the second.

Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651 and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685.

Charles II was the eldest surviving child of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and Henrietta Maria of France. After Charles I's execution at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War, the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II king on 5 February 1649. However, England entered the period known as the English Interregnum or the English Commonwealth, with a government led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe. Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Charles spent the next nine years in exile in France, the Dutch Republic, and the Spanish Netherlands. A political crisis after Cromwell's death in 1658 resulted in the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, and Charles was invited to return to Britain. On 29 May 1660, his 30th birthday, and he was received in London to public acclaim. After 1660, all legal documents stating a regnal year did so as if he had succeeded his father as king in 1649.

In 1677 King Charles II decided that Gosport, on the south coast of England, should be fortified. An earth rampart was erected around the town with a dry moat outside it. In the early 1700s a brewery and storehouses for the navy were built there. There was also an iron industry in Gosport in the 1700s supplying artefacts for the dockyard. Gosport grew greatly on the fact that it supplied goods to Portsmouth, on the other side of the natural harbour. We can imagine it as a busy and prosperous town.

It was in the middle of this busy background that William Clark (junior) (direct descendent) was born to William Clark (senior) (direct descendent), a shopkeeper in Gosport, and Thomasin his wife, and their child was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Gosport on 30th March 1697, twenty years after the start of the fortification of the town. One wonders whether William Clark (senior) the shopkeeper was visited in his shop by Thomasin, and a relationship developed, or maybe she came to work for him.

In the early 1700s, as our William Clark (junior) was growing up, Gosport had 3 main streets, North Street, Middle Street (The High Street), and South Street, with minor streets running across them. In Middle Street stood Market House. This building was on stilts. The council met in the building and a market was held underneath. A cobbled slipway called “the hard” jutted into the sea where the Falkland Gardens exist in the twentieth century. Priddy's Hard is a former military installation in Gosport, named for the original landowner and the firm beach found there. The site originated as a 1750s fort, and then became an armaments depot for Royal Navy and British Army weapons, explosives, and other stores. The site was decommissioned in 1988, after over two hundred years of operation, with part now being developed for housing and an area retained as a museum.

In 1717 when William (junior) was twenty-one, Gosport had three weekly markets and two fairs. (A fair was like a market but was held only once or twice a year, so it was a huge occasion and attracted people from all over Hampshire). The two fairs were held in May and October. They both closed in 1900.

Maybe William Clark (junior) met Elizabeth Carter (direct descendent) at one of these fairs when she travelled there from Brockenhurst, also in Hampshire, or maybe William took a trip to Brockenhurst and met her there. We do not know, but what we do know is that William (junior) decided not to follow his father in his shop, but to get married in Brockenhurst, Elizabeth’s parish in 1719, where they then settled.

Individual characters in this story are listed here, then in Chapter Six is their history of where they lived, in alphabetical order by surname.

If you find that your interest is in, say, one surname, maybe the Chapter Three is the only chapter that refers to your personal family history, you can go down this list, find all the references to chapter three, and look up those characters in Chapter Six.
