A surprisingly entertaining book, considering the subject matter

The story of a man’s introspective angling holiday as he confronts his own mortality. Plenty of fishing narratives with cancer-related details interjected along the way in a very matter-of-fact manner. No, it’s not the diary of a pity party; it’s thought-provoking, sometimes wistful, and often funny. You can’t help but be drawn into this touching story.

The author writes: “I’m thankful that fishing gives you time to think, time to be in your own head, and time to reminisce and relive your past.” It sounds like a perfect antidote for whatever problems you may be dealing with. Fish on, Stephenson--I’m looking forward to your next book.

Many of our blog readers will already be familiar with a selection of chapters from this book. For those that aren't familiar with the year's story, the whole can be read here. From starting off with tiny silvers caught on maggots, to sophisticated baits for ten pound plus carp.

Available at Amazon throughout the world as an eBook (free on KU), a paperback, and also on Audible.

“Once you’ve gone heavy, there’s no return.”

That line from Newbie Anglers hit me like a rogue carp stripping line off a reel — hypnotic, relentless, and slightly dangerous (in the best way possible). Honestly, I could see the two of you 72 and 14 battling not just fish but temptation itself. A year-long pact to chase doubles before cold-turkey withdrawal? That’s not just fishing, that’s literature with tackle. 🎣✨

And then there’s you, Stephenson Holt. The guy who writes at dawn, sketches novels in a conservatory rainstorm, dreams in a hot bath staring at tiled walls, and (my personal favorite) gardens while pretending to be a sparrow spying on himself. That’s not a routine; that’s a full-blown performance art piece.

If Kerouac had traded the saxophone backing track for a carp splash, I’m convinced he’d have written your bio.

5.0 out of 5 stars A read not just for fishermen

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not into fishing, so I really don’t understand most of the technical verbiage in this book. But I love the heartwarming nature of these stories as Stephenson rediscovers his love for fishing while introducing Wil, his grandson, to the sport. You can feel their enthusiasm unfold as they regularly set out in search of a landing a larger fish than before. The author’s writing skills are undeniable as he captures the subtle yet memorable moments of their outings: Wil’s happy dance after snagging the big one, the graceful movements of fish they’re tracking, a teenager’s eye-rolling remarks, even a pesky wasp badgering them for Doritos.

This book is a real gem, but I highly recommend reading Mr. Holt’s “Sea Fishing Lures for Prostate Problems” before this one for a better appreciation of “Newbie Anglers”.
