I cannot claim to be an Egyptologist, but can say that after being expertly guided around temples on a week's Nile cruise, I was taught about the different ages of Egypt, the Gods, and the Pharaohs. So it was that chapter one of Lawrence's book, "The Beggining," had me hooked and wanting more. Much more.
" ... places of the Ptolomies and the resting places of the ancient kings were visited by travellers to our lands, who marvelled at these wondrous feats constructed long ago, when their own people were still gathering berries and nuts to survive," seemed more than relevant words, even today.
The first person narrative of following chapters brought, for me, the story alive, making it personal, telling me the reader what happened on a one to one basis, and I was continually made aware that the level of research that went into this book was phenomenal.
